Description

Mealybugs are a serious plant pest that blights ornamental indoor plants and greenhouse crops. Covered in a white waxy material they love humidity and are prolific sapsuckers. They’re commonly found colonising cacti, succulents, African violets, orchids, citrus plants and tomatoes.

Badly affected plants will have stunted growth, leaf yellowing and sometimes reduced flowering and yields due to problems photosynthesising. You may also find a residue of excreted sugars (honeydew) on plants, which can play host to mould.

These little ladybird larvae are prolific predators of mealybugs and used throughout the world to control them. They will munch their way through huge numbers of mealybugs, including their larvae and eggs, until they pupate into the adult Cryptolaemus around 21 days after application.

They will stay pretty much where you put them, so you can apply them directly onto infested areas. When they’re fully grown they’ll continue to feed on mealybugs so you’ll benefit from many stages of their life cycle.

The Cryptolaemus adults have a life cycle of around 25 days, during which time they will also breed and produce a further generation of larvae.

When to apply:

Use as soon as you spot a mealybug infestation to nip it in the bud. They do require warmth and will only be active in temperatures of at least 16°C. For optimum control use at 20-25°C with high levels of light.

How to use:

Simply open the sachet and lodge it in foliage for the Cryptolaemus larvae to make their way out naturally. If, after a few hours, some larvae are left inside, gently tip them out onto the infested plants.

For a light infestation apply 10-20 larvae per m2. If treating a heavier infestation, use 20-40 larvae per m2. Repeat applications may be needed for very heavy infestations. Add more larvae every 2 weeks until clear populations of Cryptolaemus have established on the plant.
