Buy Pilosella aurantiaca fox and cubs (syn Hieracium aurantiacum ): Add blasts of zesty colour to wilder gardens

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil:well drained or dry, poor to moderately fertile
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to August
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Found growing in meadows throughout Europe, this pretty, summer flowering perennial is a wonderful addition to a wildflower garden or naturalised planting scheme. It spreads by underground rhizomes and forms rosettes of glaucous, slightly hairy leaves. These form the backdrop from which upright, branching stems rise, carrying burnt orange flowerheads in summer. A tough litte plant that is rarely affected by pests and diseases and will thrive on poorer soils.

  • Garden Care: Divide over-large clumps in spring or autumn.
