Drought

Symptoms

These vary depending on the plant and the severity of the drought. To start with leaves turn yellow and will fall early. Growth is poor, buds fail to open and drop. Eventually, the whole plant will die.

Cause

Inadequate rainfall or watering. It might also be that root damaged is causing the plant to have problems taking in sufficient water. Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to drying out as they have such a limited root system.

Harm

Plants lose their leaves early, growth is stunted and the plant will eventually die.

Treatment

Improve the condition of the soil by adding organic matter such as well rotted farmyard manure at planting time and mulch the surface to conserve moisture. Water thoroughly during very hot or windy weather. Water plants in containers regularly. Water retaining granules can be added into the compost. These are small crystals which swell up and hold water.
