Ponds with rigid concrete liners can be damaged by ice. When the water freezes, it expands putting pressure on the liner at the sides of the pond – eventually causing it to crack. You can prevent this by floating a inflatable balls on the surface so that the ball absorbs much of the pressure exerted by the expanding ice.
