Buy Hydrangea paniculata Skyfall ('Frenne') (PBR) hydrangea: Super-sized flower clusters

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist, well-drained, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: July to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Large, hyacinth-like flowers form in super-sized conical clusters, that top the strong, (mainly) upright stems for several months from midsummer. Opening from fresh green buds, the flowers are initially white, but take on a pink flush as they age. A spectacular sight when in full bloom, 'Skyfall' will make a handsome informal hedge, is compact enough for a large pot, and is striking enough to be used as a stand-alone specimen.

  • Garden care: To enhance flowering prune hard in early spring, cut back the previous season's shoots to within a few buds of the permanent, woody framework of the plant.
