Plant description

These highly attractive, wine-red perennials look particularly good together in this brooding combination. To lighten the mood a little, you could try teaming them with the silvery sprays of Melica altissima 'Alba'.

What's included:

In this collection you will receive three of each of the following plants. They are all supplied in 9cm nursery pots.

  • Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata 'Black Barlow': A popular cultivar among garden designers, this lovely granny’s bonnet has beautiful, fully double, spur-less purple-black flowers in late spring above fern-like green leaves. It looks gorgeous with other black flowers and is equally at home in cottage-garden schemes or among grasses. Grows to 90cm.

  • Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata 'Ruby Port': A stunning form with fully double, spur-less burgundy flowers in late spring above ferny green leaves. The rich, deep red flowers look superb paired with ornamental grasses or with traditional cottage garden flowers. Happiest in soils that retain moisture over the summer, Aquilegias can be quite short-lived, but they will usually self-seed freely - though rarely becoming a nuisance. Grows to 90cm.

  • Lysimachia atropurpurea 'Beaujolais': Striking, burgundy flower spikes on long slender stems flower continuously from May to September. The attractive, crinkled, rosettes of silver-green foliage are an excellent foil for the flowers, which are also highly attractive to butterflies. A versatile plant that spreads slowly and performs best in a moist border in sun or partial shade, or it can be grown in a pot on the patio. It makes an excellent cut flower too. Grows to 60cm.

    • How to care for Aquilegia and Lysimachia plant combination:

    Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. For best results it is essential that the plants are kept well watered for the first year, particularly during warmer weather.

    Please note:

    The plants in this collection will die right back in autumn, then fresh new growth will appear again in spring.
