This exotic bulb is sometimes called the peacock flower, an appropriate name in view of its startling colour combinations - in shades of scarlet, orange, pink, yellow, mauve and white, usually with contrasting markings. It isn't very hardy and is normally grown as a tender summer annual, planted in spring and dug up again in autumn for storing in a dry frost-free place. It needs all the sun available, as this not only encourages flowering but also ripens the bulb to ensure a similar display the following year. - Garden care: Plant bulbs 10cm (4in) deep. In cold areas lift the bulb after flowering and overwinter in dry sand at a temperature of about 10°C (50°F).
- CAUTION toxic if eaten/skin & eye irritant
