Buy Salix gracilistyla 'Mount Aso' Japanese pink pussy willow:

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: any deep, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April to May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The stems of this wonderful new form are clothed with fuzzy pink catkins in late winter and early spring, which are impossible not to stroke each time you pass. These look their best as they start to swell in mid- to late winter and make a wonderfully eye-catching feature for the winter garden. Even when the flowering has finished, the lush foliage, which has a silvery reverse, makes a great backdrop throughout the spring and summer for other plants that are just starting to bloom. Introduced by a breeder who specialises in cut flowers, the stems look equally impressive when cut and added to the vase. Please note that this form has been top-grafted onto a 60cm clear stem.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter and shorten any over-long shoots. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted compost in the planting.

This arrived with two pink catkins which were very soft and attractive. I wish there were more but hopefully in years to come there will be. I've potted this plant as opposed to planting it in the ground because I didn't want to risk my pipes being damaged by the roots, as our property is on a water line. I would check the roots because ours arrived potbound. I've since pruned them to maintain plant health, and there are now soft, silvery leaves growing in abundance (and at speed)
