This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: December to February
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

During the warmer months, these deciduous shrubs will offer the perfect backdrop to the showy, summer flowering perennials, but come the autumn, they start grabbing the limelight when their foliage starts to turn rich tones of yellow and orange. Then, after all the leaves have been shed, slender-petalled, golden yellow flowers appear in small clusters along the length of the splaying stems. These offer a rare burst of seasonal colour - and on more mature plants, look dazzling when viewed against a bright blue sky.

  • Garden care: In early spring remove any misplaced, crossing or diseased branches and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant.

Can this shrub be grown in a large pot?

    Gardening newbie

As it is not particularly fast-growing, it could be grown in a large pot (provided it is kept well fed and watered) for a number of years, but ultimately it will be happier in the ground.

    Is this plant fragrant, please?

Yes, the flowers do have a light perfume.
