Buy Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Pembury Blue' Lawson's cypress: Said to have the bluest foliage of all the Lawson's cypress

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist, well-drained neutral to slightly acid soil
  • Rate of growth: slow-growing
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The young ferny foliage of this handsome conifer emerges each spring with a silvery lustre, but as it matures, the colour takes on a deeper blue tone - particularly in winter. It makes a stunning focal point, and will very slowly grow to form a medium-sized tree, but if it is clipped back regularly, it can be used as hedging.

  • Garden care: Apply a generous layer of mulch around the base of the plant (avoiding the immediate crown) in late winter. Pruning is not usually necessary, however any shoots that ruin the symmetry of the plant can be removed in autumn.
