Buy Baptisia 'Purple Smoke' false indigo: Butterflies like these flowers

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained, preferably sandy soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April to June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A wonderful hybrid from North Carolina Botanical Garden, its greyish violet pea-like flowers form in long spikes that are supported by near-black stems. This false indigo is perfect for a well-drained border or a dry, sunny bank as it will become drought tolerant once well established. Resist the temptation to cut the plant back in autumn as the seed-pods and slender stems look wonderful frosted in the winter garden.

  • Garden care: Keep new plants well watered. Lift and divide large colonies in early spring.
