Buy Athyrium filix-femina lady fern: A delicate, graceful fern

This fern is deciduous so all its fronds will die back in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again each spring.

    • Position: full or partial shade
    • Soil: moist, fertile, neutral to acid soil
    • Rate of growth: average
    • Hardiness: fully hardy

This is the lady fern, with graceful, bright green, filigree-like leaves. One of our recommended plants, it looks great planted in bold swathes with other shade-loving plants in a sheltered, shady woodland edge, shrub or mixed border. It is deciduous, and begins to look tatty in the autumn, so try it among evergreen ferns or late-flowering perennials.

    • Garden care: Incorporate lots of well-rotted leaf mould, composted pine needles or garden compost into the planting hole. In cold areas in late autumn protect the crown of the plant with a dry mulch of straw or bracken.

This fern is in a shady place under a tree - which is the reason I bought it.

Would not buy again.

This fern died back soon after planting. I was assured by Crocus that this was normal and that it would start new growth in the spring. Well it never did and hasn't to date.

South coast.

Charming fern

Survived autumn and winter, this spring so far has grown. Well pleased with this fern and look forward to how it progresses.

Reliable background plant for our rockery and fountain

We love our garden and so do our neighbours when they join us for friendly get-togethers during the summer months.
