Buy × Heucherella 'Sweet Tea' (PBR) coral bells: Sumptuously coloured seasonal foliage

This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, moist or well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to August
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Large, deeply lobed, burnt orange leaves, with a richer plum central blotch and veining, are the main feature of this shade-loving perennial. A wonderful container plant, it will also look attractive as an understory plant on a woodland floor.

  • Garden care: Remove tatty foliage in autumn. Lift and divide clumps every couple of years in early autumn and replant with the crown just above the surface of the soil. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the crown of the plant in spring.

A good foliage plant for lasting colour

Good for the edge of the border. Colour creates interesting contrast with other foliage plants.

Beautiful but I find difficult to grow

I really love this plant and it should work well in my garden design. However, I find them particularly fragile and sometimes they do not need seem to flourish at all, though the conditions should be agreeable. One or two plants in the same spot would do well but some others would not. I haven't given up with them yet!
