Blossom end rot

Blossom end rot

Symptoms

It usually occurs on tomatoes, but occasionally can affect sweet peppers. Brown, sunken patches appear at the blossom end of the fruit. Not all fruit on the same plant will be affected and those plants in containers and growbags are more susceptible.

Cause

Dry conditions around the root of the plant prevent it from taking up enough calcium. Low calcium content in the plant causes the cells to collapse and turn brown.

Treatment

Make sure that the plants are watered regularly and kept moist at all times. If blossom end rot does develop then just remove the infected fruit and improve the watering. If possible grow tomato plants in the ground or larger pots so the compost or soil is less prone to drying out.
