Dig over areas of the garden that you intent to plant this autumn is the weather and soil conditions allow. Choose a pleasant autumn day to dig designated planting areas to the full depth of the spade?s blade (known as a spit) and remove any weeds and other debris. Pay particular attention to remove the roots of perennial weeds because even a small piece can re-sprout. Break down the soil by chopping it with the spade to leave the surface even without any large lumps. Improve poor soils by adding well-rotted organic matter and fertiliser, taking time to mix it in thoroughly.
