Buy Verbena bonariensis 'Meteor Shower' (PBR) purple top: Compact and free-flowering

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: borderline hardy (may need protection in winter)

A new cultivated form of the ever-popular Verbena bonariensis, 'Meteor Shower' is noted for its compact habit (it's bigger than 'Lollipop' but shorter than the species) and bushier growth. That means it is useful for filling gaps in the border, or giving a 'fuller' look to pots, while still supplying lashings of the much-loved violet flowers over a really long time.

  • Garden care: In cold conditions it can suffer dieback if cut back in autumn, so it's best to leave the plant until spring and cut back the old growth when you see the new shoots emerging at the base. Also it's a good idea to mulch around the base of the plant with a deep, dry mulch in winter to help protect the plant.
