Buy Salix helvetica Swiss willow / I am Olivier: olive lookalike

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: any deep, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April to May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The crown of this attractive willow is densely branching and forms a tight mound of grey-green leaves, which look very similar to those of an olive. Unlike an olive (Olea spp.) however, this plant is tough, and fully hardy, so it can easily withstand the worst of the British winter. It has been top-grafted onto a straight 60cm high stem to create a handsome half standard, which can be potted up or used as a focal point in a mixed border. A deciduous shrub, this Salix will lose its leaves in the autumn, but it will offer late winter or early spring interest, when silvery catkins appear from yellow buds before the new foliage.

  • Garden care: Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter and shorten any over-long shoots. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted compost in the surrounding soil. Immediately remove any suckers that may appear below the graft union on the stem.
