  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: February to April
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

The lipstick-red spidery flowers put on a great show from late winter and early spring, particularly as they are accentuated by the burgundy coloured foliage. This is a decorative evergreen shrub, that offers a dazzling contrast to the greens in a mixed or shrub border. Happiest in partial shade, it also makes an excellent understorey plant in a woodland setting.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning, but lightly trim after flowering to encourage bushy growth.

In my opinion this is a great little shrub. Its evergreen so great in the border for year round colour in a spot that doesn't get sun all day. It doesn't require much maintenance either as its relatively slow growing. I planted it near a Lophomyrtus × ralphii 'Magic Dragon' and the two shubs compliment each other nicely - especially teamed also with Geum Cosmopolitan and some cream crocus. It's not too formal in it's shape so a useful plant if you're after a relaxed & fluid planting scheme.

Your description of Loropetalum chinense Ever Red states that it will grow in humus rich moist but well-drained soil, but as it is part of the hamemelis family, I wonder if it will grow in alkaline soil, as hamemelis won't.

Hello there It will tolerate most soils although I wouldn't grow it in a highly alkaline soil.
