Buy Ferula communis giant fennel: Great for adding architectural interest

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moist but well drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering period: June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A native to the Mediterranean from North Africa to Spain and the Canary Isles where it is often found in rocky places. This plant cannot fail to add a bit of pizzazz to the border. It is a superb and spectacular plant that can reach up to 2.5m tall when in flower, but the delicately divided foliage ensures it does not dominate. The airy foliage emerges in spring and forms a loose dome. When the weather warms up, a towering stem emerges, bearing a eruptions of bright yellow flowers. They are drought tolerant when older, but may become dormant if the soil becomes really dry.

  • Garden care: Remove the flowerheads as they fade as the plants may die if they are left to set seed. They develop a large tap root, so dislike being moved when mature.
