Buy Dahlia 'Jescot Julie' dahlia: An unusual orchid-flowered dahlia

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: fertile, humus-rich soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to October
  • Hardiness: half hardy (may need winter protection)

Each ray floret (petal) has a delicious burnt orange upper surface, with a rich plum base, creating an interesting and colourful mix. They look sensational when mixed with deep, blood reds and dark golden tones. Growing up to 8cm across, the flowers appear in small clusters on the upright stems for a really long time from mid summer to the first frosts. They are also terrific when cut.

  • Garden care: Stake with canes or brushwood if it becomes necessary. Provide a high-nitrogen liquid feed each week in June, then a high-potash fertiliser each week from July to September. Once the first frosts have blackened the foliage, carefully lift and clean the tubers and allow them to dry naturally indoors. Place the dry tubers in a shallow tray, just covered with slightly moist potting compost, sand or vermiculite. Store in a frost-free place, checking frequently over the winter months. In warmer areas, tubers may be left to overwinter in the ground, although they may suffer from slug damage, particularly in heavy clay soils.

Very pretty Dahlia

These Dahlias were delivered as large plants, very healthy and flowered until about October. I have recently removed the tubers from the pots and stored them for growth later this year when hopefully they will produce more large flowers.
