Buy Berberis thunbergii 'Tiny Gold' (PBR) golden barberry: Bright foliage is useful for accent

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: slow to average
  • Flowering period: April and May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Forming a dense mound of foliage, which emerges bright yellow in spring and takes on a fresh lime-green colour as it matures, this low-growing shrub looks great towards the front of a border where it will contrast well with rich plums and purples. Primarily grown for its colourful foliage, which will turn bright red in autumn before it falls, the small yellow flowers it produces in late spring and early summer are a bonus.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Where pruning is required, cut back in autumn or winter, after the appearance of the autumn fruits.

Bought to go in pots to replace Box that died of blight. So far looking very healthy (fingers crossed) lovely bright green colour. Growing in a good mound shape. Look like an excellent replacement for the Box,

How prickly are the thorns on this charming berberis? I would like to plant it in a border by a children's playground but am worried that the children would hurt themselves if they chose to touch it. Can the thorns pierce the skin?

alchemilla

Hello, I would probably advise planting this in a children's playground as not only could the spines puncture the skin if it is grabbed or fallen onto, but they can also cause skin irritation.
