Buy Berberis thunbergii 'Lutin Rouge' (PBR) barberry: The foliage colour can be quite dazzling

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: slow to average
  • Flowering period: April to June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Add some colour to the mixed or shrub border with this new, brightly coloured offering. It has relatively upright growth and is nice and compact, so works well towards the front of the border. Once established, it is virtually maintenance free, becoming tolerant of drought and very cold hardy. It is so easy to grow, yet when grown in full sun, the foliage will put on a really dazzling dispaly. It can also be grown in shadier conditions, however in those conditions the foliage will revert to green.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Where some pruning is required, cut back in autumn or winter, after the appearance of the autumn fruits.

I got this for my front garden which has a red and white colour scheme. It hasn't done well, had to be protected from cats by a wire 'cage' and has never shown much red in its foliage, it will be replaced later this year.

Is the foliage an orange shade of red, or more of a pink shade, also, what colour are its flowers? I want to buy one of the small berberis and this is the best size, but needs to tone with orange and purple flowers. Thanks

Min

Hello, The foliage colour does vary depending on the time of the year (it is brighter initially but turns darker as it matures) and the aspect (it becomes greener in shadier spots). As for the flower colour, the breeder has not mention this in any of their details so I suspect they are similar to the species (ie. pale yellow).

this plant is the size that I want how much shade can it take

Hello, These prefer a sunnier spot, as although they will tolerate partial shade, their foliage will revert to plain green if they are not in full sun.
