Buy Asarum europaeum wild ginger: Lustrous foliage for a shady corner

This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: cool shade or partial shade
  • Soil: prefers humus-rich soils which do not dry out in summer
  • Rate of growth: slow initially but with good spreading capacity
  • Flowering period: March to April. Most floriferous following a warm summer in the previous year
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A robust and reliable groundcovering plant, which once established will remain evergreen throughout the year. Commonly known as wild ginger, it has sweetly sweetly pungent roots and has been valued and cultivated as a medicinal herb since the 13th century. It is also invaluable however for providing attractive foliage in shadier spaces.

  • Garden care: A low maintenance plant requiring only a light mulch of leaf mould or garden compost every one or two years to maintain soil fertility.

Adds a lovely touch of green

4

Adds a touch of green to fill out areas of beds etc that might otherwise be empty. It is sensitive to lots of sun and dry soil (as I learnt after planting it in a south facing bed) so be sure to follow instructions and plant in some protective shade to get the most out of it.

Great little plant. Spreads itself over time. Great value for ground cover.

Amazing plant, we absolutely love this plant it has great ground coverage and is thick and green throughout most the year, it thrives in shaded areas and in sun areas. but must be regularly watered. Easy to look after, had no issues. Just needs regular watering especially after hot days

This is called Wild Ginger - is the root edible? We use masses of ginger! Thanks Ann Chellone

AnnGee

In times gone by this plant has been used by herbalists, however although the roots do have a faint ginger-like smell, they are not edible.

I love this plant and was wondering if you think it would do well in a large pot? If so can you recommend planting companions to go with it and help brighten up a shady corner on my patio? thank you Emily

Morning Yes you could grow this plant in a pot but it does like moist, well drained soil so it must not dry out. It is a ground cover plant growing to approx 15cm tall by 30cm spread. I would use plants like ferns, hostas, and shade loving grasses as companion plants. Hope this helps
