Buy Aronia × prunifolia 'Viking' chokeberry: Particularly large, black berries

This plant is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May and June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Said to contain three times as many antioxidants as blueberries, these dark purple-red berries, which can be harvested in autumn, have a tart flavour when eaten raw, but are delicious when cooked and used in compotes, summer puddings and jams.

  • Garden care: Each year in February or March remove one in three of the older stems of established specimens.

Great plant to have

5

Plants arrived healthy and well packed (best packaging I have seen). Replanted in bigger pots and left in green house for first two months. Managed to get few berries in first year. Looking forward to get more berries this year. I have few chokeberry bushes but never managed to get berries in first year after purchase. I like to eat them fresh or freeze and then add in smoothies.
