Symptoms

Patches of reddish or bleached grass appears in the lawn. On closer inspection dark pink, horn-like fungi can be seen on the individual grass blades, which later turn pale pink and fluffy.

Cause

A fungus called Corticium fuciforme.

Harm

The grass is rarely killed but it is weakened and looks very unsightly. It is more common on fine lawns that are made up mainly of fescues. Perennial rye grass and annual meadow grass are not really affected. Poor aeration and low levels of nitrogen in the soil also encourage the disease.

Treatment

Improve the drainage of the lawn by aerating and top-dressing each year as well as feeding regularly
