Phytophthora

Symptoms

There are several symptoms that point to phytophthora and a plant may show only some or all of them. The possible symptoms are; rotting at the base of woody plants, sparse and discoloured foliage, stems show signs of dieback and inspection of roots show that the smallest ones have been killed and the larger ones look blackish-brown. Finally, if the bark from the base of the plant is removed, a blackish or reddish discoloration is visible

Cause

A soil and water-borne fungus which is often exacerbated by poor drainage.

Harm

Badly affected plants will be killed.

Treatment

There are no chemical treatments for phytophthora. Poor drainage can encourage the development and spread of the fungus so you can help prevent problems by adding well-rotted farmyard manure and gravel when planting new plants on poor soil. Since there is no control, infected plants should be dug up and removed. It is also best to remove as much of the surrounding soil as is possible.
