Irregular watering

Symptoms

The outer bark cracks or splits.

Cause

Irregular watering. A plant which suddenly receives, lots of water after a period of drought will rapidly swell, causing cracking.

Harm

The splitting itself is not normally sufficiently severe to be fatal. However, frost and diseases are able to enter into these wounds and they can cause more serious problems.

Treatment

Water well and regularly, particularly those plants that are kept in containers. Particular care should be taken in hot or windy weather when plants can dry out very quickly. Water retaining granules can be added to the compost used in containers. These granules swell up with water, retaining it ready for the plants during drier spells. Mulch round the base of plants in the garden with a good thick layer of well rotted farmyard manure, as this will help conserve moisture in the soil.
