June is a good time to take softwood cuttings from many popular shrubs and herbaceous plants. Choose a healthy non-flowering shoot that is typical of the plant being propagated and remove it using a sharp knife. Trim the cutting to just below a leaf joint so that it is 5-10cm long (depending on the material being used) and remove the lower leaves. Dip the cut end of the cutting in a hormone rooting powder before inserting around the edge of a pot or spacing in a seedtray filled with moist compost. Cover a pot with a clear poythene bag held in position using an elastic band and put a special plastic cover over the seedtray. This will help prevent wilting. Place in a well-lit position out of direct sunlight.
